More About Shea

Passionate About My Work As a Therapist

I am a Licensed Professional Counselor with over 20 years of experience working with adolescents and adults. I am a Certified EMDR Therapist and use EMDR therapy with the majority of my clients. I am also a Certified Professional School Counselor in the state of Georgia.

Education and Training

Originally from Tuscaloosa, Alabama, I attended the University of Alabama where I obtained a Bachelor of Science in psychology with a minor in human growth/development and family studies. I moved to Atlanta to attend graduate school at Georgia State University where I obtained a Master of Science in Community Counseling in 1998. While attending Georgia State University, I also attended Psychological Studies Institute (PSI), now known as Richmont Graduate University where I obtained a Master of Science in Christian Psychological Studies. The focus of this training was the integration of psychology and counseling with the Christian faith. In 2003, I decided to attend the University of West Georgia where my studies focused on school counseling in order to obtain my certification as a Professional School Counselor.

Experience

I have worked in a variety of settings including adolescent residential substance abuse treatment, inpatient psychiatric hospitals, the public education system and private practice. My background also includes working with children and adolescents in group homes and the foster care system.

Therapeutic Approach

I primarily utilize EMDR Therapy (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in my work as a therapist. I also utilize techniques and theory from Family Systems Theory,  Reality Therapy, Gottman Therapy and Person Centered Therapy in my practice. I  believe that a thorough assessment is crucial in helping clients identify areas of concern and to set counseling goals.

Personal

When I am not working, I enjoy spending time with my husband, two daughters, other family members and friends. I am an animal lover and my second career would have been a veterinarian. I enjoy gardening, photography, reading, college football (Roll Tide!) and spending time outdoors.
